Description
Acrylic glass XT is extruded rather than cast. It machines less well than acrylic GS — it makes sense wherever surfaces stay untouched: glazing, picture frames, simple model making. In visible transparency, XT and GS are indistinguishable.
Typical uses: lightweight constructions in model making and display cases, picture frames and glazing, signs and light objects.
Acrylic glass does not yellow in sunlight, so it is well suited to outdoor use. It expands with heat — always mount it with a little play so the sheet is never under stress.
Acrylic is an excellent light guide: it collects light across its surface and emits it at the cut edges — great for light objects. The lit surface must not be covered, and the light source should stay below the maximum service temperature of 70–80 °C.
Further processing
Acrylic glass XT bonds with dichloromethane and thermoforms at 150–160 °C.
Cleaning
No glass cleaners — they roughen and dull the surface. Use warm water with washing-up liquid or a dedicated plastic cleaner. Stubborn dirt comes off with white spirit or isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol, available at any pharmacy).
Protective film
Acrylic glass always ships with a peelable protective film. Detach small parts from the film carefully — delicate pieces can break otherwise.
Bridges
For this material we generally recommend small bridges: interrupt the cut contour by at least 0.5–0.8 mm. For parts under 15 × 15 mm and filigree elements, bridges are essential — all parts stay safely in the sheet until they reach you.
Good to know
Acrylic XT in 5 mm is not suited to designs that combine small cut-outs with engravings — say, a 1 cm hole with a heavy raster engraving around its rim. The cutting heat warps the material and the engraving loses precision. Use acrylic GS for such designs; it also allows finer, crisper engravings overall.
